Locks explained simply

Think of these notes as the conversation we would have while packing up the tools. What to keep an eye on, what a rekey actually does, why the spare key under the mat is a bad plan, and how to keep a car key from becoming a problem.

Can you get me in if my smart lock has died?

Yes, usually. Backup access on a keypad or app-controlled deadbolt depends on the model. Many carry small external terminals that wake the lock when a fresh nine-volt battery is touched to them, long enough to enter your code; some also keep a conventional keyed override behind a cover, which a locksmith can pick or decode like any other cylinder, while other current models have no cylinder at all and rely only on their own recovery method. Once inside, the batteries are replaced and your codes are checked. Home Lockout Service

Can you open a door that has a push bar on the inside?

Yes. From outside, an exit device is operated through its trim, which may be a keyed lever, a pull with a cylinder or a bare rim cylinder. Depending on the trim fitted, picking or decoding that cylinder either retracts the latch directly or unlocks a lever, knob or thumbpiece that then has to be turned to let the latch go. The bar, rods and dogging feature stay as installed for the emergency way out, and the bar is pressed afterward to confirm it releases the latch with one push. Business Lockout Service

Is a broken key a sign the whole lock is worn out?

Sometimes, and the visit answers it. A key that failed from its own fatigue in a clean, smooth cylinder says nothing against the lock. A key that broke because the pins were worn flat, the cap had loosened or the keyway was full of grit says the cylinder needs a service or a rekey. One that broke in a corroded, pitted plug is telling you the lock is due for replacement. Broken Key Extraction

What is a security strike box and why fit one?

A security strike is a heavier plate with a formed steel pocket that wraps around the bolt instead of leaving it in bare wood. It is set into the jamb and fixed with long screws, typically three inches, that pass through the jamb and the shim space into the framing, with the longest screws placed nearest the door stop where the bolt bears. Manufacturers specify the pocket depth so the bolt extends fully. The result spreads a kick across the wall stud rather than two small screws. Break-In Damage Lock Repair

How long does a rekeying visit take?

It scales with the number of cylinders and how many need attention beyond pinning. A single deadbolt is a short bench job; a whole house with five or six exterior cylinders, a couple of swaps for mismatched keyways and a set of spares to cut and test takes a good deal longer. Tell the locksmith how many doors you want included when you book, and the visit can be planned realistically rather than guessed at. Lock Rekeying

Does a deadbolt work with a storm door or screen door?

It does, with one check: the thumb-turn and the outside cylinder have to clear the storm door when it closes. Most storm doors leave enough depth, but a low-profile deadbolt trim is chosen where the gap is tight. The storm door's own latch is separate and does not replace a bolt on the main door, since a screen frame gives little resistance on its own. Deadbolt Installation

Can you replace the lock on a sliding patio door or French doors?

Yes. Sliding doors take a replacement mortise hook lock sized to the rail, often with a keyed exterior, and benefit from a secondary foot bolt or a pin through the frames. French doors are secured by treating the inactive leaf properly with flush bolts into the head and sill, then fitting a deadbolt to the active leaf with a strike into that reinforced edge. Both are routine parts of a residential upgrade. Lock Replacement & Upgrade

Can the work be done with the lock left in the door?

Rarely, and it is not the better route. Almost everything that fails is inside the case, and the case only opens once it is out of the pocket, which takes a few minutes and leaves no mark. Working through the keyhole with an unapproved or over-applied spray tends to wash out what little lubricant should stay and gums the levers later. Removing the case, cleaning it properly and refitting it is the repair that lasts. Vintage Mortise Lock Service

Can you help with a safe found in an inherited or estate property with no records at all?

Yes. The locksmith identifies the safe directly from its hardware, brand plate if one survives, and physical layout, then proceeds with the same manipulation, decoding or reset options used on any safe with an unknown history. Documentation such as a will, an executor's letter or a property transfer establishes your authority to have it opened. Safe Opening & Combination Change

Is a fireproof safe also resistant to a break-in?

Not automatically. Fire resistance comes from an insulated, sealed construction that is not necessarily built to resist tools, while burglary resistance comes from thick steel and hardened plate that is not necessarily built to survive a sustained fire. Some units are built and rated to both standards at once, but a fire-only safe left unrated for burglary should not be assumed to hold up against a determined attempt with tools. Safe Installation & Servicing

Can a hardware store or kiosk copy my new key?

No. The blank for a patented keyway is distributed only through the manufacturer's network to locksmiths who hold the system, and the side milling or angled cuts need a machine set up for that line. A kiosk would have neither the blank nor the cut. Extra keys come through your locksmith, cut from code, once an authorised person has approved the order. That routine is a small inconvenience compared with never knowing who has a copy. High Security Locks

Is a restricted keyway worth it for a business?

A restricted keyway uses blanks that only the locksmith or authorized source can obtain, released against whatever that key-control program requires, a signed letter, card, signature record or factory authorization naming who may order keys. Hardware stores and kiosks have no blanks, so copies are far harder to get without your say-so. It costs more per key than a standard keyway and is most valuable where keys pass through many hands, such as retail with part-time staff, shared premises or anywhere the count of copies has drifted before. Commercial Rekeying

How long does designing and installing a master key system take?

It depends on the number of doors and levels involved. A small business with a handful of doors and one or two levels moves through assessment, pinning and testing in less time on site than a multi-floor property with several departments and a top-level master, where more doors, more testing and more keys to cut all add to the work involved. Master Key System Design

What maintenance does the system need going forward?

Ongoing maintenance is light: checking the battery backup and the request-to-exit device periodically, keeping reader surfaces reasonably clean, and revoking credentials promptly once someone leaves. Door and frame alignment is worth a look at each change of season, since a shifted door can affect how cleanly an electric strike or a magnetic lock releases. Access Control Installation

How high should the crossbar or touchpad be mounted?

Exit-device makers publish a mounting range for their own models, and in practice a crossbar or touchpad sits no higher than about 1200 mm above the finished floor. The locksmith sets the hardware inside the maker's range and below that ceiling, allowing for anyone in the space who needs a lower reach, a wheelchair user or a shorter staff member among them. My child is locked in the car. What should I do first?

Call 911 before you call anyone else. A vehicle interior can climb past 50°C in about twenty minutes on a mild day, and a cracked window does little, so responders treat a child in a closed car as an emergency and are equipped to get in at once. Then call the locksmith, who will come as backup and can also make sure the car is secured and working afterwards. In winter cold the same rule applies. Car Lockout Service

Do you use original manufacturer fobs or aftermarket ones?

Both exist, and the locksmith will say which is proposed for your car. Original parts match the vehicle exactly and are the safer choice for the newest systems and for features like remote start or phone pairing. Well-made aftermarket keys and fobs are widely used on common models and suit spares and older vehicles. What matters in every case is the correct frequency, part number and chip type, which the VIN confirms. Car Key Replacement

Is it possible to leave out certain functions on the spare, like remote start?

Yes. A spare can be built to do everything the first key does, or scaled back to just the blade and chip that unlock a door and start the engine, without a remote start button or a trunk release. This is agreed before programming begins and is a deliberate choice rather than a lesser copy, useful for a valet, a young driver, or anyone the household wants kept to essential access. Spare Car Key Duplication

Can you tell me which fob to buy before you arrive?

Often, yes, once the vehicle's identification number, model year and trim are known, since those details narrow down which fob part is actually compatible. Buying the wrong part number is a common reason a programming attempt goes nowhere, so confirming compatibility before ordering saves a returned part and a second visit. Key Fob Programming
