2021 census · what it means at the door

  • 58%Older homes

About 58% of homes in Toronto were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.

Basement and side entries on older homes were often fitted long after the house was built, with whatever lock was on hand. Bringing those doors up to the standard of the front entry, and onto the same key, is a common and satisfying job.

  • 23%

Single-detached houses make up about 23% of homes in Toronto (2021 Census).

Landlords and property managers dominate in attached housing, and they want keys organised. A locksmith sets up master systems so a manager carries one key while each tenant's key opens only their own door.

Locksmith services

From lockouts to master keys

Homes and businesses in Mount Dennis tend to need the same handful of things from a locksmith, so that is how the list is arranged: emergency openings, changing or rekeying locks, stronger hardware for people who want it, commercial doors and access, and safes. Car keys sit at the end for the households that need them.

Change or rekey

Change or Rekey Locks

Deadbolts, cylinders, strikes and keys are the four things we look at on every home visit, in that order. A weakness in any one undoes the others.

When you call from Mount Dennis, a locksmith answers, not a dispatcher reading a script. He asks what the door is doing, tells you what the visit will likely involve, and arranges a time. The assessment and the price happen at the door, once he has seen the hardware. The same person who took the call is the one who does the work.

How a visit goes

Businesses are locked out by people as often as by hardware. A keyholder is away, a former employee still has a key, a master key has gone missing, or the only spare lives in a drawer behind the locked door.

Drawing: a house seen from the street. The van pulls up, the garage door is opened for the work, then it closes level and the porch light comes on.

    Verifying the caller

We ask for something that ties you to the premises: a lease, business card, or a call to the owner. Opening a shop for the wrong person is not a risk we take.

  2. 2 of 3

    Getting the door open

Storefront and office locks vary, so we choose the approach that leaves the hardware intact wherever possible. If the lock itself has failed, we tell you before opening it.

  3. 3 of 3

    Getting you back to trading

Once inside we check the lock, cut keys if needed and note anything that should be addressed later so your day can carry on.

Your questions, our answers

(289) 804-2598

How long does a home lockout usually take once the locksmith arrives?

The opening itself is often the shortest part of the visit; verifying identification, examining the lock and testing the door afterwards take a share of the time too. A standard knob or deadbolt on a well-fitting door is generally a matter of minutes, while a high-security cylinder, a frozen lock or a swollen door takes longer. If a cylinder has to be drilled and replaced, or locks are rekeyed while the locksmith is there, allow extra time for that work.

What is a reinforced strike, and is it worth adding?

A standard strike is a thin plate held by two short screws in the jamb, and the jamb is what splits when a door is forced. A reinforced strike or strike box is heavier and is fixed with long screws that pass through the jamb into the framing, spreading the load into the structure. It is one of the most effective upgrades on any exterior door and is usually fitted as part of a deadbolt replacement.

I rent. Can I have a smart lock installed?

Yes, with your landlord's agreement first. Tenancy rules in this province expect a tenant to have the landlord's consent before changing a lock, and expect the landlord to have a working way in, so the sensible route is a short conversation and a note of what will be fitted. A retrofit model that mounts inside and keeps the existing exterior lock and key is often the easiest thing for a landlord to say yes to, since the door is unchanged from outside.

Can you fix a mailbox door that is bent or won't close?

Yes. A compartment door that has been pried at, dropped on a loose hinge, or pushed out of square over time is straightened or adjusted as part of the same visit, since a bent door will fight even a brand new lock. The door is worked back into alignment, the hinge or latch checked, and the new lock fitted only once the door closes flush again.

When does a locksmith decide to drill a safe instead of opening it another way?

Drilling is chosen when the gentler options for that specific lock, manipulation and decoding on a mechanical dial, or a manufacturer reset or override on an electronic one, are unavailable or have not worked, rather than following one fixed order on every safe. It is also the answer when the lock has genuinely failed, such as a seized wheel pack or a dead circuit board with no working override. The decision is explained before drilling starts, not discovered afterward.
